The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for Pickering Rouge Canoe Club members will be on Wednesday,…
Your chance to vote for your local Municipal and Regional representatives comes on October 22. PRCC’s site on Frenchman’s Bay is located in Ward 1 of the City of Pickering where four candidates are running for Regional Councillor and six for City Councillor. As well, four candidates are seeking to be Mayor of Pickering.
PRCC has contacted all 14 of these candidates as well as the six candidates for Ward 2 (the east part of Frenchman’s Bay) to make them aware of the need for an accessible paddling facility. It is important that our voice as PRCC members be heard. The goal is to build a facility in 2020 in Phase 2 of the Park development, as specified of the Rotary Frenchman’s Bay West Park Master Plan.
The facility does not need to be elaborate. We need a basic structure to house accessible washrooms and change rooms for the public and PRCC members, adequate and safe storage for boats, and ideally a multi-purpose room.
Despite the Beachpoint Promenade closure over the last two summers and rough facilities with no electricity or running water, PRCC has grown its children’s, PaddleALL and high performance programs. With a proper facility, we can do much more. We can foster opportunities for youth, young adults and parathletes, not only for their own development, but to inspire and instill community pride as they compete provincially and beyond. We can offer boat rentals to the public, encouraging people to explore the waterfront and engage in healthy outdoor physical activity.
Now is the time to build a legacy that will last for generations. Pickering has the opportunity to create a unique waterfront with an accessible beach and top-notch paddling centre that will be a source of pride for the community. Let your local candidates and representatives know where you stand and get their support.
